The Bathery's Rule About Gloves

Don't forget about your hands. They are always exposed to the environment and are abused by our actions. They are one of the first places aging is seen, along with the neck and décolletage (chest).

In the winter handcream is a must, and so are gloves. Gloves are not just meant for warmth, but also for protection from the elements. You may not get cold hands when the temperature starts to drop, but your hands are still feeling the effects of the environment.

Dry winter air has lower levels of humidity and sucks the moisture from your skin. This is why it is critical to not only protect your face with a barrier protector, but also protect your hands.

And if you work in an office and handle a lot of paper, that paper is going to be absorbing oils and moisture from your hands as well, as you probably already can tell. So couple that with winter weather and you have an aging disaster LITERALLY on your hands!

So here is The Rule:

When the temperature drops below 50* it's tme to start wearing gloves. These can be a lightweight glove such as leather or cotton.

When the temperature drops below 40* it's time to bring out the warm woolies! Heavier duty gloves are now required. These can be fleece-lined or heavier woolen gloves.

And mandatory is a good emollient hand cream before slipping into your gloves.

But in order for your hands to be able to fully absorb the handcream, you need to give them a quick scrub.

Super simple home scrub:
Olive oil and sugar. Add a little of each to the palm of one hand. Enough to make a loose paste. Now just massage all over your hands. Get the palms, the backs, the knuckles, even the cuticles. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Now slather on your handcream.

If you really want to be "natural" try using a few drops of olive oil, jojoba oil, vitamin e oil, or shea butter as your "handcream".

But critical is the wearing of the gloves. It's the perfect way to indulge your inner glove fetishist and keep your hands young looking!

Essential Fatty Acids

Essential Fatty Acids are the building blocks of our bodies’ fats and membranes. They were originally known as Vitamin F.

Your body cannot manufacture EFA’s on its own so they must be gotten from your diet and/or from supplements. Good dietary sources of EFA’s are fresh wild salmon, sardines, and walnuts. Eat them twice a week. Try adding ground flax seeds to your salads. Supplemental sources are fish oil, cod liver oil, salmon oil, and flax oil. Take 2 tbsp. daily.

EFA’s help reduce inflammation, improve eczema and psoriasis, ease depression and anxiety, keep us hydrated and supple, and make our skin youthful and glowing!

Lack of Essential Fatty Acids results in EFAD – Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency.
EFAD can cause several problems with your skin, most notably, excess keratinization or a build up of dead skin cells which causes your skin to look dull and flakey. Micro-comedones and hyperpigmentation can also result from EFAD.

Lack of essential fatty acids in your skin increases the amount of water that evaporates from your skin (trans-epidermal water loss – TEWL). Increased TEWL results in less water in the skin which impairs the enzyme activity needed to desquamate or exfoliate dead skin cells. And impaired desquamation means more dead skin cells stuck to the outer epidermal layer (keratinization), as well as dead skin cells getting stuck in the pores and follicles causing micro-comedones.

EFA’s contain Omega 3 which helps restore collagen and elastin in the dermis, and Omega 6 which helps restore parts of the epidermis.

The Importance of Double Cleansing

You wouldn’t take a shower with your clothes on would you? No, you have to remove your clothes first before you can wash your body. It’s the same with your face, first you have to remove your makeup and the day’s grime before you can get to the business of deeply cleansing your skin and pores. Double cleansing every evening has been a staple in Asian skincare for years and can be done on any skin type.
Two products are used in double cleansing, a facial makeup remover (which can be different from an eye makeup remover), and a facial cleanser.
Facial makeup remover is used as the first cleanse to remove makeup, dirt, oils, sweat, pollution and the days accumulated grime.
Facial cleanser is used as the second cleanse to deeply cleanse pores and surface skin.
Facial makeup remover can come in different forms, from liquid, oil, gel, or cream, to plain old olive oil. Which form you choose will depend on your skin type, and the product line you are using.
Begin your double cleansing in the evening. Put a small amount of your chosen form of facial makeup remover onto one or two cotton pads and gently massage your entire face. If necessary, use a second set of cotton pads to remove any excess makeup remover and debris. If desired, rinse with wet cotton pads. If you don’t have a specific facial makeup remover, you can use plain old oil olive oil, or in a pinch, you can also use your facial cleanser for the first cleanse. But it’s best if you use the proper products for the proper step.
Facial cleansers also come in a variety of forms. Generally they are creamy, foaming, or gel. Some newer cleansers for sensitive skin may also be oil-based. Again, the form you choose will depend on your skin type, and the product line you are using.
To deep cleanse, put a small amount of your chosen facial cleanser into your hands and rub together, then pat onto your face and gently massage with water or a wet washcloth or sponges, or a Clarisonic brush. Massage thoroughly, then rinse thoroughly with water.
In all, double cleansing should only take about 2-3 minutes in your evening skincare routine. Double cleansing your skin allows it to more easily breathe, excrete, and regenerate. Thorough cleansing of your skin is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure clear and radiant skin. So take the few extra minutes to give your skin the double cleansing it needs and it will reward you by growing healthier and stronger.
On a final note, don’t forget to moisturize after you have cleansed. Once cleansed, it’s time to feed your skin. This is where moisturizers and night creams come in. You have now completed a basic evening skincare routine.

Skin Aging

Great looking skin is smooth, radiant, glowing, firm, unlined and "poreless". The key to achieving this is prevention and early intervention. Skin aging can begin as early as age 25. By 60 skin has thinnned and can no longer fight the effects of gravity. Not only does genetic aging affect the skin, so does sun exposure. Sun exposure can account for as much as 90% of age-associated changes in the skin's appearance. Skin aging is the slow accumulation of damage. To counteract this, sun exposure and tanning must be eliminated and a comprehensive program combining professional skincare with clinical treatment solutions must be implemented.

Dehydration

Perfect skin requires water.

Dehydration slows your metabolic rate.
Skin functions slow down.
Skin cell turnover rate decreases.
Sebum production decreases.
Healing rate of breakouts decreases.
Waste products from within the skin can't be flushed efficiently.
Normal elimination slows down and toxins buld up in the large intestine and colon.
A person who is overweight has a lower percentage of water in their body.
The increase in bodyfat that comes with being overweight reduces the amount of hydration in the body.
People who are overweight are constantly dehydrated, making it harder to lose excess pounds.
Swelling of the face can also be caused by inadequate water consumption.
Drink half your body weight in ounces each day.
Example: 200 lbs. drink 100 oz. or 12.5 glasses of water daily.

Aging is Cellular - and we don't mean from your phone!

It is now known through direct clinical examination that the key to longevity, youth and health is found at the cellular level. Cellular research has demonstrated that aging is more than skin deep, it involves internal, external, and emotional factors.
So, eat well, live well, and be well.

Super-simple single-ingredient summer masks!

Super-simple single-ingredient facial masks you can make quickly and easily. Choose the one that best suits your skin.

Corn Mask for Dry Skin
The fat content and high protein of corn soothes dry skin. Grate an ear of corn and strain off the milky liquid. Pat on your skin and let sit for 15-20 minutes; rinse with cool water.
Melon for Aging Skin
Honeydew, cantaloupe, and watermelon all help tone skin thanks to vitamins A, B and C. Cut paper-thin slices of fresh melon and place on your face and neck. Let sit for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with cool water.
Tomato Mask for Oily Skin
Tomatoes are mildly acidic (for sensitive skin, use less acidic yellow ones), so they make a great mask for oily and acne prone skin. Using a clean cotton ball, spread a thin, even layer of fresh tomato juice over face and neck. Let sit for 10 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
Raspberry Mask for Sun Struck Skin
Fresh raspberries make a great post-sun facial mask. Lightly mashed, their juice soothes and refreshes skin. Mix fresh juice with a small dollop of honey. Spread the mixture on your skin and let sit for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

Microcurrent Facelift and Infrared Light Therapy

Microcurrent Facelift
A microcurrent facelift is a non-surgical, non-invasive cosmetic technique that safely and effectively improves the health and appearance of the skin.
A microcurrent facelift can physically firm and tone the skin through muscle re-education. This process of a gentle ‘re-education’ of the fine facial muscles stimulates them with very small amounts of electricity. MicroCurrent impulses trigger a chemical reaction at a cellular level to activate the skin's natural chemicals responsible for health and vitality (ATP - adenosine triphosphate, a protein that is referred to as ‘the energy of life’). By reproducing the body’s own biological current we can re-establish muscle memory naturally.
A microcurrent facelift delivers a variety of benefits to patients who wish to attain a healthier and younger looking appearance, such as: improve muscle tone in face and neck, lift jowls and eyebrows, reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, improve facial circulation, skin exfoliation, lymphatic drainage, sun damage treatment, skin pigment improvement, product penetration, and much more.
A microcurrent facelift utilizes microcurrent technology which uses gentle electrical stimulation to trigger the body's natural skin enhancement chemicals at a cellular level. Clinical studies have shown that after twenty days of treatment collagen production increases by 14 percent, elastin increases by 48 percent, and blood circulation increases by 38 percent. Scientists have also found that microcurrent facelift treatments trigger the body's production of amino acids and ATP. Both of these accelerate cell repair and promote healthier cell production.
The best candidate for a microcurrent facelift is any patient who wishes to maintain or gain a youthful appearance. Younger clients can seek a microcurrent facelift to prevent some of the aesthetic effects of aging. Older clients can be rejuvenated by having a microcurrent facelift.
The microcurrent facelift procedure requires no anesthesia, no recovery time, no down time from work, and has no irritating side effects. To achieve the ultimate benefits of a microcurrent facelift, approximately twelve treatment sessions are recommended. Routine follow up treatments are performed to maintain microcurrent facelift results.

Infrared Light Therapy
Light therapy is the application of light energy to the skin for therapeutic benefits. It is a natural photo-biochemical reaction similar to the process of plant photosynethsis. NASA’s space program has proven that LED light therapy (near-infrared) promotes wound healing and human tissue growth. The energy delivered by the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) has been shown to enhance cellular metabolism, accelerate the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells, as well as stimulate the production of collagen - the foundation of a healthy and smooth skin. A lot of research has shown that LED Light Therapy may help to smooth skin texture, improve skin firmness and resilience, increase the lymphatic system activity, restore skin’s natural cellular activity, and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and superficial hyperpigmentation. The treatment is for all skin types and it is non-ablative, non-invasive, painless and there is absolutely no downtime. Patients or clients can return to their normal activity immediately after the treatment.

Benefits of Light Therapy

Our new infrared/microcurrent machine is on it's way, so we have been studying up on both modalities. Here's is some great info about infrared from Dr. Perricone:
(and we are wondering if this could be a benefit claim for our much loved infrared sauna that we hope to get?)

Inflammation can age your skin....

...so what do chemical peels do? They inflame your skin.

Came across this quote on www.ageless-beauty.com & felt that it was fitting to The Bathery's approach:

If you’ve read any of Dr. Perricone’s books, you know that he believes inflammation to be at the root of skin aging. In fact, he says inflammation and skin aging “are so intrinsically linked by the processes of both that aging is sometimes described dermatologically as a chronic low grade inflammatory condition.”

What is Oil of Oregano?

Numerous university studies have shown that Oil of Oregano is a highly potent purifier that provides many benefits for human health. Oil of Oregano is a natural substance that is extracted from wild oregano plants, and two key compounds found in it are carvacrol and thymol. Studies have shown that both of these compounds have significant effects on harmful microorganisms that cause many illnesses in humans. It is important not to confuse Oil of Oregano with common oregano that is used as a spice for cooking. Common oregano is typically Origanum Marjoram, while Oil of Oregano is derived from Origanum Vulgare. Oil of Oregano can be purchased as either a liquid or as capsules/tablets. In both forms, it is important to verify that the oil is derived from the proper potent oregano plant, and that the carvacrol concentration is at least 70%.

What are the Benefits of Oil of Oregano?
The ancient Greeks were one of the first people to recognize oregano oil for its health benefits and medicinal qualities. It is known to be a potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic oil that can reduce pain and inflammation and effectively fight off infections. Some of the specific benefits of Oil of Oregano are:
Destroying organisms that contribute to skin infections and digestive problems.
Strengthening the immune system.
Increasing joint and muscle flexibility.
Improving respiratory health.

Uses of Oil of Oregano

Skin Infections
Oil of Oregano can be applied directly onto the skin to treat itches, skin infections, and irritated gums, but only if it has been diluted. Always follow the instructions on your particular bottle before applying topically onto the skin, since highly concentrated oils may first need to be mixed with Olive Oil or Coconut Oil before application (usually one teaspoon of Olive Oil or Coconut Oil per one drop of Oil of Oregano).
Digestive Problems
The high concentrations of thymol and carvacrol in Oil of Oregano have been shown to calm upset stomachs and aid digestion. Therefore, a quick home remedy for mild indigestion is to drink a glass of milk or juice that is mixed with 2 or 3 drops of the oil.
Sinus Congestion
Oil of Oregano is a wonderful
natural remedy for sinus congestion. A common solution is to add 3 drops of the oil into a glass of juice and drink this mixture daily for 3 to 5 days.
Colds and Sore Throats
Oil of Oregano is an excellent early defense mechanism when you feel a cold or
sore throat coming on. Simply take 3 drops of Oregano Oil once per day (you can mix it into a glass of orange juice) and you should notice results within a few hours. Repeat this once per day for up to 5 days until the symptoms are gone.

What are the Side Effects of Oil of Oregano?
While Oil of Oregano has many benefits, there are a few possible side effects:
Oregano oil may reduce the body's ability to absorb iron. Therefore, it is recommended that any regular use be combined with regular consumption of iron supplements. For this reason, pregnant women are advised not to take Oil of Oregano regularly.
People that have allergies to thyme, basil, mint, or sage may be sensitive to Oil of Oregano as well, since they are in the same family of plants. If any skin irritation, rashes, or vomiting occurs when using it, it is recommended that you discontinue use and consult your doctor.

Poor digestion leads to all kinds of icky things!

Take a trip through the intestinal tract to appreciate how your food is digested along the way - and learn how you can help your food be digested better at each stop along the way.

Skin Cancer Rates on the Rise, Study Finds - ABC News

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/SkinCare/skin-cancer-rates-rise-study-finds/story?id=10126452

The importance of hydration:

Poorly hydrated skin gradually loses the ability to protect itself. It becomes irritated, blotchy, lacking in radiance and comfort, and wrinkles are more likely to appear. Completely moisturized and balanced, skin is able to receive the benefit of specific ingredients with ease. ~Phytoceane

*Drink water daily
*Gently exfoliate daily
*Moisturize daily

Eating in harmony with your DNA

Some foods are compatible with your DNA. Other foods aren't. We know from scientific research that our present-day DNA is virtually identical to that of the caveman and cavewoman's. Over seven million years, the foods they ate become compatible with their DNA, which is our DNA today. These foods are called Paleo Foods.

Here's what the cavepeople ate:
*Animal proteins, such as meat, fish, and poultry
*Nuts and seeds
*Vegetables and fruits, including edamame (fresh green soy beans) and berries
*Eggs
*Honey
*Herbs and spices

You can eat and DIGEST these foods with ease. Few people are allergic to whole categories of these foods. These foods are low glycemic and good for your skin. You could possibly be allergic to one of these foods, if so, don't eat it.

A second category of foods is called Neo Foods. Humans have eaten them for only 10,000 years or less. These foods haven't been in the food chain long enough for human DNA to adapt well to them. Humans began eating these foods after the domestication of animals, which took place about 10,000 years ago.
These foods include:
*Dairy, cheese, milk, ice cream
*Grains, breads, flour, rice
*White potatoes and corn as we know them today
*Soy protein isolate as contained in soy shakes and protein bars
*Chocolate *Coffee
*Alcoholic beverages
*Artificial foods

Plenty of people are allergic to whole categories of these foods, such as dairy or wheat. They are high glycemic or medium glycemic. People with autoimmune disorders who stop eating these foods often regain their health.
Ideally, for both your skin and your overall health, you would eat Paleo foods exclusively, because they're totally compatible with your DNA. But realistically, people love baked goods and ice cream.
So here's how to have a bit of your cake and eat it too:
Eat Paleo Foods for about 80-85% of your daily intake and eat Neo Foods less often, around 15-20% of your daily food intake.
Make adjustments to those ratios if you aren't getting great results with your skin and health.

-Herbs and spices boost your skins health. They are filled with anti-oxidants and health-giving nutrients. Use them to enhance the taste of all your meals and your skin will benefit as well.
-Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, are excellent for your skin health. (And according to The Bathery's Naturopath, they can also help to balance your hormones, great for menopausal fluctuations.)
-If you're hooked on soy shakes for breakfast, keep the shake but lose the soy. Instead, add whey powder to your shake. That way you are getting all nine essential amino acids, without the worries of eating too much soy, which can lead to serious problems like thyroid disorders and dementia. Consider eggs with fruit for breakfast, now that's Paleo!
-If you have a skin autoimmune disorder, such as psoriasis, eczema, seborrhea, or rosacea, eliminate Neo Foods from your diet for one month. If your condition improves, continue eating Paleo Foods.

Anti-aging products drive global skincare

They have said that when the economy suffers, women will still buy lipstick to make themselves feel better - but in our current recession it is reported that facial skincare sales surpassed makeup sales, with anti-aging products specifically, maintaining a growth of 10% during 2007-2008, making it one of the biggest drivers of global skincare during the past five years. ~ As reported by Euromonitor International

It takes effort to have beautiful skin.

This is a tough time for high-end beauty brands of all sorts. Sales of luxury beauty products have fallen in the U.S. since the recession started, as Americans have traded down to drugstore products or simply bought fewer cosmetics. (Sad.)

Also, American and Japanese women still take sharply different approaches to skin care. Though skin-care awareness has increased in the U.S., the amount of money and time the U.S. consumer spends on her regimen is still far lower than that of her Japanese counterpart. The average Japanese woman spends 60% of her cosmetics budget on skin care, compared with 30% for American women.

A Shiseido survey found nearly 69% of Japanese women used cleanser, toner and moisturizer religiously at night, compared with only 17% of American women. Indeed, Shiseido has documented that the average Japanese woman employs a much larger array of products each evening—as many as six products. First, she removes her make-up with an oil-based product. Then comes cleansing the face. This is followed by a lotion—a toner-like skin softener—and then possibly an "essence," or serum. Finally, she pats on an emulsion, which is less viscous than a cream, and then a traditional cream. All of this is achieved while performing an elaborate facial massage meant to help prevent sagging and wrinkling.
(The Bathery endorses this method of skincare).

"The psyche of the American consumer is about a quick fix, and not about prevention," says Ms. Yamagishi-Dressler of Shiseido.
Says Cassandra: I find the above to be the saddest statement of all. American women are so quick to spend thousands on botox and injectibles, but they refrain from spending one or two hundred dollars and putting in the time with effective skincare products. I would like to have a hand in re-educating American women about their skin and skincare practices.

Noevir Herbal Skincare

Noevir is The Bathery's sideline skincare product. This wonderful product line is made in Japan using herbs and botanicals from the Baden-Baden region of Germany, where our family is from! This excellent video demonstrates the use of cleansers, toners, masks, and moisturizers. This protocol can be used for all skincare products. The video also explains the importance of daily skincare, something we teach all of our clients. 8 minutes worth watching! If you would like a facial at The Bathery using Noevir products, just ask!

Don't be fooled by the hype!

Was recently reading in some industry mags and had to chuckle over some of the marketing ploys some spas are using to draw you in and make you think you are getting something "unique" and therefore justifying the ridiculous prices they charge. Let me be the one to tell you, there is a lot of hype over some newer but somewhat standard treatment methods.
Last year The Bathery got a Clarisonic face brush and an ultrasonic skin scraper. The Clarisonic is an amazing ultrasonic brush used for cleansing the skin. The skin scraper is a useful tool that gently and effectively "scrapes off" dead skin cells via "cavitation". A lot like the Sonicare ultrasonic toothbrush.
Interestingly, we have been hearing a lot about "crystal-free microdermabrasion" and had to find out what this could be.... well.... it's nothing more than ultrasonic skin scraping. And spas are charging hundreds for it!
Another spa we recently read about is offering an "ultrasonic facial". Of course this perked our interest since we are using ultrasonics at The Bathery. As it turns out, the facial is 30 minutes of nothing more than using the Clarisonic brush to cleanse your face, then exfoliate using the ultrasonic scraper, and the additional use of the new Clarisonic Opal which is for exclusive use around the eyes to penetrate eye creams deeper into thin tissue. (The Bathery may get one of these soon).
What we find so humorous in all this is that, at The Bathery, we incorporate ultrasonics into almost every facial we do. We almost always use the Clarisonic brush for cleansing, and depending on the type of facial we are doing we like to use the ultrasonic scraper for both exfoliating and penetrating of masks and creams. And we don't charge extra for it! It's standard operating procedure.
So don't be fooled by these high end fancy spas telling you that you need to spend hundreds of dollars for their special procedures. You don't. Just come to The Bathery.

Super simple anti-aging Apple Mask!
Peel one organic apple in one complete ring. Place apple peel, flesh side onto face. The anti-aging, anti-oxidants in apples lie directly beneath the outer peel. Phloretin is an ingedient found in many anti-aging cosmetics.

Express Hand Care!
Add olive oil to 1/2 tsp. sugar to make a paste. Scrub hands and rinse. Warm 1 cup olive oil and soak hands for 5 min. Rub oil into nails, cuticles and hands. Dab off excess oil with a kleenex. Soft and smooth hands in minutes!

Lemon-Herb Wrap!
Cut two lemons into thick slices. Put into large pan along with several sprigs fresh Rosemary. Add hot water & let cool slightly. Add 1/4 cup olive oil. Soak a large plush cotton bath towel in mixture. Wring out and wrap body for 10 min. Lemons refresh and tighten. Rosemary stimulates circulation. Olive oil moisturizes.
